Kinabalu National Park, situated around 85 km from Kota Kinabalu in Sabah is dominated by Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in Malaysia at 4,093 m high above sea level. Covering a staggering area of 754 sq km, this botanical paradise is blessed with an astonishing variety of flora & fauna (probably one of the richest flora collection in the world) including the Rafflesia, the largest flower in the world which can blossom and grow up to 45 cm (18 inches) across.
Kinabalu National Park is not only popular with climbers but also with nature lovers who come and observe the birds, butterflies and the flora & fauna.
An easy 2-hour scenic drive from Kota Kinabalu, Kinabalu National Park is a popular getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city where visitors can enjoy the cool invigorating air. While the focus of the park is the Mount Kinabalu, most visitors don’t climb all the way to the peak but come simply to enjoy the serenity of this place.
The gateway to the summit of Borneo is the Kinabalu Park Headquarters, situated on the southern boundary at an elevation of 1,563m (5000 ft), where most of the modern facilities are available here such as visitors’ accommodation, restaurants, exhibition centres & the Park’s offices.
A minimal entrance fee is imposed at the entrance of the Kinabalu Park HQ.
One of the biggest attractions at Kinabalu National Park is the Mount Kinabalu Botanical Garden (Mountain Garden). Started in 1981, this 5-acre garden is an excellent showcase of the diverse plant life on the mountain which are lovely and have medicinal properties
